Tenorio Volcano National Park

Tenorio National Park is only a few minutes away by car. At the entrance you’ll receive a small map which you can use to explore the park on your own. In the park, a small, snaking path takes you through the rainforest. If you’ve got all day, we recommend that you first hike to the “Tenidores”. Here you’ll see how the confluence of two rivers produces a chemical reaction that turns the water turquoise – a fascinating and unique sight. This blue color gives the river its name, “Rio Celeste”. The high point of any visit to the park, however, is the waterfall – rushing water can be heard from far in the distance, and then suddenly you’ll see spray rising from a narrow gorge.

Horseback riding and swimming in the Rio Celeste

The hills around the Tenorio National Park are perfect for trail rides. The diverse flora and fauna, the impressive landscapes and a dip in the Rio Celeste make this activity a real insider tip.

Caño negro

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is on 102 square kilometers of wetlands. It’s about a 2-hour drive from La Amistad in northern Costa Rica, close to the border with Nicaragua. Over 307 bird species make the refuge their home. In the dry season, these biotopes turn into small lagoons with a rich diversity of wildlife.
